Coltrane's last album, Olé, which was released on Atlantic, was recorded in May 1961, two days after his debut Africa/Brass, which was released on Impulse. This groundbreaking album featured contributions from McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Eric Dolphy , a very young Freddie Hubbard and bassists Art Davis and Reggie Workman. The complex rhythmic patterns and varied sonic textures on Olé Coltrane are proof that John Coltrane had once again set his own course. His skills as an outsider, which transcend his considerable musicianship, take works like this to a new level and ultimately advance the entire art form.
