Although it was released after Coltrane's move to Atlantic and was initially seen more as a collection of leftovers from various sessions, Lush Life became one of Trane's most successful prestige albums. One reason for this is certainly the unusual piano-less line-up on the August 16, 1957 recording, which makes up the bulk of the material. Coltrane (tenor sax) alone had to hold together a very compact trio of himself, Earl May (bass) and Art Taylor (drums). The trio's session here is complemented by the track "Slowtrane", which despite the different title is an alternative take on "Trane's Slow Blues". Also included as a bonus are three of the four existing tracks recorded during the same session that produced "Lush Life".
