On 11 March 1829, the twenty-year-old Felix Mendelssohn conducted a performance of Bach's St Matthew Passion in Berlin, almost 100 years after the work had last been performed. The concert was such a success that the Passion was performed once more, on 21 March and on Good Friday, 17 April. Following these successes in Berlin, the Passions were performed in many German cities, including Leipzig in 1841, where Mendelssohn was then the Kapellmeister at the Thomaskirche, where the Passions were first performed. For the first performance, Mendelssohn had already reworked the work according to contemporary standards, convinced that such an update, even in terms of instruments, would allow listeners to better understand what he considered to be the heart of the Passion story. Mendelssohn made further changes for the Leipzig Concerto and it is in the 1841 version that you will hear the Passion on this CD in a live recording by the remarkable Netherlands Symphony Orchestra.
