The album was recorded in the band's home studio and produced by Ian Anderson and Terry Ellis. The album reached number 12 on the UK Albums Chart and was awarded a Silver Certificate by the British Phonographic Industry. The album spawned two singles, "Beastie" and "The Clasp". The Broadsword and the Beast is a concept album that tells the story of a young man's journey from boyhood to manhood. The album is divided into two parts, with the first half focusing on a young man's journey and the second half focusing on his homecoming. The album is rock and folk and features a mixture of acoustic and electric instruments. Critics have praised the album, with AllMusic, for example, awarding it four and a half stars out of a possible five. The album was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
