It was the band's first album released since the death of bassist and founding member John Glascock in 1979. Crest of a Knave was met with mixed reviews from music critics, but was commercially successful, reaching No. 20 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 38 on the Billboard 200 in the United States. The album was awarded a British Phonographic Industry (BPI) silver certificate for selling over 60,000 copies in the UK.
