Tahliah Barnett aka FKA twigs has been going through a tough time since the release of her successful Mercury Prize nominated debut album "LP1". Breakups, surgeries, heartbreak - Barnett processes her traumatic experiences in her music, and so on her second studio album she rises like a phoenix from the ashes, audibly wounded but stronger than ever. Like its predecessor, this album was produced by FKA twigs herself and explores her sonic universe in a whole new way. It was recorded over the last three years in London, New York and Los Angeles, including a collaboration with Nicolas Jaar. The album's rhythms and arrangements reflect FKA twigs' tumultuous period. Some tracks sound deliberately washed out, almost exhausted, in a way that may remind you of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' Skeleton Tree. In addition to tracks that harken back to LP1's baroque beat odyssey - like the Future-featured "Holy Terrain" - there are also a few tracks where the drums disappear into the ether and traditional song structures give way to impressionistic, artistic sound design. It is in these instances that Nicolas Jaar's contribution to Magdalena is most evident.
