In January 2013, a series of events were held to celebrate the 40th anniversary of "Aloha from Hawaii". A double CD was released containing both performances of this legendary concert: CD 1 contains the main concert from January 14, 1973, CD 2 the rehearsal concert from January 12, 1973. The latter was first officially released on LP in 1988 as "The Alternate Aloha". As a bonus, there are five additional songs Elvis recorded for American television after the main show. The recordings were mixed and remastered by Steve Rosenthal and Rob Santos. The set includes a 24-page booklet with new liner notes and rare photographs. On January 14, 1973, more than a billion people around the world sat down in front of their televisions to see a live performance by the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Elvis Presley. His show from the "Honolulu International Center Arena" (HIC) was broadcast via satellite in more than 40 countries. RCA/Legacy, a division of Sony Music Entertainment, is commemorating this chapter in music history with the release of the deluxe double CD "Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite" to mark the 40th anniversary of the event. Elvis played two shows that day - an actual concert and a public dress rehearsal. These performances had previously been available only on two separate recordings, the 1973 double album "Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite" and the 1988 CD "The Alternate Aloha". Now, for the first time, "Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite" features both events in one package. In addition, the dress rehearsal of "The Alternate Aloha" has been completely re-optimized digitally using the original multi-track tapes. The double-CD booklet features rare photos and an essay by BBC commentator and musician Stuart Colman. The Legacy Edition was produced by Rob Santos and Ernst Mikael Jørgensen, who together with Roger Semon have been working on Elvis Presley's back catalogue for over two decades. The "Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite" program broadcast a complete concert by a solo artist via satellite to the entire world for the first time in television history. More than 6,000 fans turned out for the concerts at the HIC, now known as the "Blaisdell Arena," creating the backdrop for what is still the most expensive television broadcast ever produced. It wasn't Elvis' first appearance in Hawaii. He had already performed there in March 1961 (at Bloch Arena). At that time, he donated the $62,000 proceeds from the concert to the construction of the USS Arizona Memorial, which still commemorates the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The show, which television viewers witnessed on January 14, 1973, began at 12:30 p.m. local time. King was at the height of his career and gave a breathtaking concert, enthralling the audience with 24 songs from all stages of his career. To make the Hawaiian show distinctive, Elvis made sure that the set list did not contain too many duplications with other concerts, such as the 1972 Madison Square Garden concert. It was also important for Elvis to sing songs other than the ones audiences could hear in the 1972 documentary "Elvis On Tour." The film was the talk of the town at the time, won a Golden Globe a year later, and was the last film the star was in. After the 12:30 performance, Elvis and his musicians gathered (without an audience) to record five more songs for American television. Four of these songs came from the soundtrack of the 1961 film Blue Hawaii: "Blue Hawaii", "Ku-U-I-Po", "No More" and "Hawaiian Wedding Song". The fifth song was a cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "Early Morning Rain". With this cover, Elvis showed how close he was to the then burgeoning folk-rock and songwriting movement. "Aloha from Hawaii via Satellite" broke viewership records in Japan, the Philippines, Korea, Hong Kong and Australia. In the first week of February, the complete concert recording was released on a double-LP record and was a huge success in record stores: the LP hit the Billboard 200 chart on February 24 and sold more than 500,000 copies in its first four weeks. The single "Steamroller Blues" - Elvis' version of the James Taylor song - hit the charts in April, reaching the Top 20 and selling over 400,000 copies. In the U.S., the TV broadcast was postponed so as not to compete with MGM's "Elvis On Tour." It was not until 4 April that US viewers were able to see the TV special, which achieved a sensational viewing figure of well over 50%. Sales of the double album were correspondingly high and it reached number one on the Billboard chart, displacing Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon'. The album Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite stayed on the charts for 52 weeks and was certified platinum five times by the RIAA. It was Elvis' first number one album since the 1965 soundtrack to the film "Roustabout". "Aloha From Hawaii via Satellite" clearly shows that Elvis Presley lost none of his charisma in the 1970s. Ernst Mikael Jørgensen writes in his book "Elvis Presley: A Life In Music" about a performance in the 50th state of the USA: "A billion people would have watched this performance, but Elvis did not seem to be fazed by it at all. He wasn't nervous, he was very focused, and he delivered a flawless set of the highest order. The huge media interest, huge crowds and spectacular album sales were definitive proof that an artist can literally take the world by storm." Review , "A dream performance, in every way." (Stereo Play, May 2013) , "Elvis Presley made television history: the album for the first worldwide concert broadcast via satellite." (musikexpress, May 2013) ,,...if you want to experience all the faces of Elvis in the 70s in one hour, here is the "King in quick succession": lascivious with "Burning Love", rocking with "Hound Dog", authentic with "Steamroller Blues", but also lasciviously small with "My Way" or "What Now My Love""" (Good Times, June/July 2013)
