Tonight is the sixteenth studio album by David Bowie , released on 14 September 1984. It was his first album since 1980's Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) and his first album of new material in three years. The album was recorded and mixed at Hansa Tonstudios in West Berlin and produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti. The album was not commercially successful in the UK, where it reached number 15. However, it was a hit in the US, where it reached number 7 on the Billboard 200 chart and went platinum. The album's lead single, "Tonight", reached number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album Tonight was generally well received by music critics. David Fricke, in a contemporary review for Rolling Stone magazine, said that Bowie "sounds reborn" on the album, and praised its "sparse, elegant production" and "emotionally charged" songs. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic said in a retrospective review that the album is "one of the most underrated albums of Bowie's career" and that it shows Bowie "at his most introspective and adventurous".
