As celebrations continue for the 50th anniversary of David Bowie's first big hit, Space Oddity, the series of extraordinary Bowie releases continues in spectacular fashion: following Spying Through A Keyhole, Clareville Grove Demos and the Mercury Demos collection, Parlophone releases a sensational double seven-inch single featuring Space Oddity in brand new mixes by longtime Bowie producer Tony Visconti. The Space Oddity 50th Anniversary double single comes in a box with a double-sided poster featuring an imprint of the original Space Oddity advert and a stage photograph of David Bowie taken by Ray Stevenson on 30 November 1969 at the London Palladium while performing at the 'Save Rave '69' event in front of a painting of a NASA astronaut. The box also contains an information sheet and a print with an alternative photograph from the making of the promo single Space Oddity by Jojanneke Claassen. The cover of the original mono single is adorned with rare UK promotional artwork, which alongside the label features the original Phillips logo, the rights to which were cleared specifically for the 50th anniversary release. The single itself was transferred from the original analogue master tape. Tony Visconti's 2019 mix cover has been given a new design, featuring an alternative poster image of Ray Stevenson from the Save Rave '69 concert. Space Oddity was first released as a seven-inch single on July 11, 1969, and was also the opening track of David Bowie's second album David Bowie (which was re-released a few years later as Space Oddity). The song, originally inspired by Stanley Kubrick's cult film "2001: A Space Odyssey", gained great popularity when it was adopted as the unofficial anthem for the Apollo 11 moon landing, which took place five days after the single's release. Over the past 50 years, Space Oddity has had as endless a journey as its protagonist, Major Tom. Originally written in 1968 and recorded as a demo, the song has taken various forms: from an appearance in a film for a TV special called "Love You Till Tuesday" in an early incarnation recorded with John "Hutch" Hutchinson, to the Italian version "Ragazzo solo, Ragazza sola", which won a special Ivor Novello Award for originality in May 1970. The song was Bowie's first hit on both sides of the Atlantic (No. 5 in the UK in 1969, No. 15 in the US in 1973 and No. 1 in the UK in 1975). In 2013, it accompanied the first video shoot in space when Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield performed it aboard the International Space Station. For Bowie himself, Major Tom remained a motif that would follow him throughout his career: it appeared in the songs Ashes To Ashes, Hello Spaceboy and in the music video for ★ (Black Star).
