You Are Free is the sixth album by Cat Power , released in 2003. The album was produced by Jim White of the Dirty Three and features collaborations with members of the Dirty Three as well as with Chan Marshall's then boyfriend, actor Giovanni Ribisi. The album was recorded in Melbourne, Australia.

The 2002 album - featuring Dave Grohl and backing vocals by Eddie VedderIt's been more than two years since Chan Marshall aka Cat Power released her last, beautiful album "The Covers Record", which helped her achieve a commercial breakthrough, especially in the States. Even in Germany she managed to significantly increase the sales of her three previous albums on Matador.Chan Marshall made her debut on Matador with the album "What Would The Community Think". It was also the first worldwide release of Cat Power, which has since been loved by the whole world. The album has earned comparisons to Liz Phair, PJ Harvey and Mary Timony of Helium.Chan's career began when she moved to New York in the mid-1980s. She had just graduated from high school and started making music with a few friends. These friends talked her into playing at the legendary CBGB's, and the shy Chan has been hiding behind the stage name Cat Power ever since. For the album "You Are Free" Cat Power managed to get the support of major musicians: Mr. Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens Of The Stoneage) took care of the drums, while Mr. Vedder (Pearl Jam) took over the backing vocals on some songs.
