New songs, familiar waters It's been a while since we've heard anything from Billy Idol, at least as far as new music is concerned. Even better, the British rock icon is releasing a new EP in 2021: "The Roadside" is Idol's first release of original material in seven years, the follow-up to 2014's "Kings & Queens Of The Underground". He wrote four songs for it and recorded them with producer Butch Walker, who has worked for artists such as Green Day, P!nk, Pete Yorn and Weezer. He was also supported in the studio by his friend and fellow guitarist and co-songwriter Steve Stevens, with whom he has been making music for 40 years. He presented the first taste of the Idol EP in the single "Bitter Taste," in which he discusses death, rebirth and his personal evolution in the 31 years since his near-fatal motorcycle accident in 1990. "I think everybody felt more reflective (during the pandemic). So it seemed logical and natural to write something about my motorcycle accident," he said. "The motorcycle accident was definitely a catharsis, a moment of awakening. A small part of me was left on the side of the road. But that wasn't necessarily a bad thing, it was a wake-up call. Maybe I left the disrespectful teenager Billy on that trip and opened the door to a more attentive father and a more sensitive musician." Other songs on The Roadside are called "Rita Hayworth," "U Don't Have To Kiss Me Like That" and "Baby Put Your Clothes Back On." They show that Billy Idol has lost neither his talent for brilliant, haunting, cinematic songs nor his love of rock 'n' roll during his absence. The new EP "The Roadside" takes him into new but familiar waters full of colour, power, atmosphere, attitude and mystery. "The Roadside" is available as a maxi CD and also as a limited 12ʺ single on vinyl. The album is Idol's first release on the newly formed Dark Horse Records label, originally founded by George Harrison in 1974 and now run by his son Dhani Harrison and David Zonshine. Other artists currently signed to Dark Horse include George Harrison, Joe Strummer and Ravi Shankar.
