We've selected a recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons in the Dresden version with additional winds, which is currently in our catalog on SACD. What? Vivaldi's Four Seasons? What's new about it? A lot - when the extraordinary violinist Federico Guglielmo and his baroque ensemble L'Arte dell'Arco join forces for such an extraordinary performance event. The idea was this: Vivaldi wrote quite a bit of music for the Dresden court and its famous orchestra. His wind instrumentalists were among the top European players, so the Concerti con molti strumenti - that is, for many solo instruments - were his specialty. For this orchestra Pisendel also arranged works originally written exclusively for strings. So why not the Four Seasons - tone paintings that are an ideal choice for more varied instrumentation? Guglielmo's "rewrite" was based on a musicological comparison of all available concertos in which Vivaldi used the full number of solo wind instruments. He added recorders, oboes, horns and bassoon to the Spring, for example - and suddenly everything blossoms with a much fuller instrumental colour!
