The nineteen-year-old British singer broke through in England with her first single "Chasing Pavements": the number hit the singles chart before the album was released, thanks entirely to digital sales. The venerable BBC also predicted, "Adele is British music critics' best hope for 2008". Previous winners of the poll include Mika (2007) and Corinne Bailey Rae (2006).
